Vernon L. "Vern" Sabean

1928-2012

Vernon Lawrence Sabean, husband of Betty (Limkilde) Sabean, passed away on Wednesday, August 1, 2012 at the Saint John Regional Hospital.  Born in Saint John on March 11, 1928, he was a son of the late Saul Sabean and Hazel Mae (Hibbert) Sabean. Vern was a loving husband to Betty for 64 years, a wonderful supportive father to Tim and Pam. Vern was the owner and operator of Vern’s Bakery. "It is always fresh because we bake it right here". Vern lived his life working at his craft; this was his passion in life, creating wonderful tasty treats. Vern started his career at the Elgin House resort as a pastry chef. After many years of hard work and dedication, he turned his ambition into business ownership. Vern was an enthusiastic collector of antique cars, buying and restoring many over the years.

Vernon is survived by his wife, Betty; his son, Tim Sabean (Doris) of Moncton, New Brunswick; his daughter Pam Godsoe (Doug) of Bronx, New York; grandchildren Gregg Sabean and Natalie Sabean of Moncton, Ryan Sabean of Halifax, Charlie Godsoe of Calgary, Victoria Godsoe of Fredericton and Allan Godsoe of New York; Great-grand children Nicholas, Hyden, Alexandria; a sister, Alberta of Saint John; and several nieces and nephews.

Resting at Brenan’s Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John (634-7424), with visiting on Friday from 2-4 and 7-9 PM.  The funeral service will be held on Saturday, August 4, 2012 at 11:00 AM from the Church of St. John Baptist (Mission Church) and St. Clement . Interment will take place in Ocean View Memorial Gardens.   For those who wish, remembrances to the Canadian Cancer Society or a charity of the donor’s choice would be appreciated by the family. Dear Betty, Pam and Tim: Barbara and I send our deepest condolences on your loss. Vern was one of the finest men we knew and for the sixteen years I was at Mission Church, he was a tower of strength. I will never forget a snowstorm in S.J. & he picked me up near the old library in the truck. But it was his regular attendance at Church & his support as a Trustee and Christian Gentlemen that will long be remembered with thanksgiving to God. Our prayers are with you.

We are so sorry for your loss at this time. We are blessed by our family and those friends who help shape our lives and Vern was indeed one of those great influences on me and so many, through his hospitality, humor and genuine kind nature. He will live on with all who were fortunate to have him in their lives and for that I am truly greatful to have had Vern as my friend. Dear Betty, I just read the news now from Newfoundland where Fred and I are vacationing and was sad to hear of your loss. I think fondly of how many times you and Vern would wave at me on my way by your house or vice versa when you were walking past our back yard on your way down to see Ralph. I will be thinking of you and your family tomorrow and regret that I will not be able to attend. I am thinking of what kind of trouble Ralph and Vern are getting into up there in heaven right now and how they are likely talking about the "good ol' days in Saint John". Condolences to Pam...take care Betty.
