M. Phyllis Briggs

1920-2012

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Phyllis on September 13th, at the St. John and St. Stephen Nursing Home. Phyllis grew up in Saint John, and was pre-deceased by her husband Claude Briggs, her parents Oscar and Ida (McColgan) Garnett, and her brother Sydney Garnett. She is survived by her brother-in-law, Ken Briggs (Rhoda), sisters-in-law Margaret and Louise Briggs, as well as several nieces and nephews.

In her earlier years, Phyllis worked at the House of Fashion and Reitmans in Lansdowne Plaza. She was a wonderful person who always had a smile on her face, and loved to be involved in family gatherings; she enjoyed dropping in on people for a cup of coffee and a sweet treat. Phyllis was involved in her church, and her faith was very important to her. She belonged to a group of church women, and was a great supporter of the church. Phyllis and Claude shared their lives together in Saint John, and in the summers trailered in Long Reach. Although they had no children together, they always took special interest in the lives of their many nieces and nephews. They would always bring their cherished poodles to any given function, and brightened any room they entered. We would like to thank all of the terrific and caring staff at the St. John and St. Stephen Nursing Home who cared for Phyllis these past four years; they all held a special place in her heart, and she always had lots of smiles and peppermints for them.

Resting at the Church of St. John Baptist (Mission Church), 815 Millidge Avenue on Sunday from 2-4 and 7-9 PM. The Funeral Service will be held from the Church on Monday at 11:00 AM, with a reception in the church hall to follow. Interment will take place in Fernhill Cemetery. For those who wish, remembrances to Mission Church would be appreciated by the family. The funeral arrangements are under the care and direction of Brenan’s Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John (634-7424). Online condolences and remembrances may be placed at www.BrenansFH.com

I will miss my beautiful Auntie Phyliss. Her lively spirit will be with me forever. I still cherish the summer holidays that I spent at her house. They are my fondest memories from childhood.

Mrs. Briggs was a great neighbour and a wonderful friend!

Sorry to hear about Phyllis. I have such fond memories of Phyllis and Claude - and also Mr. Garnett - from growing up two doors away on Montgomery Crescent. She was a first-class person, always kind and cheerful. May she rest in God's peace.
